4 Things to do in Ottawa while Social Distancing

Now that we have been stuck in our homes making sure to practice social distancing, I’m sure many of you are starting to get tired of Netflix and board games. With the weather outside getting nicer, the sun starting to shine brighter, and the snow finally melting, now is a great time to take advantage of some of Ottawa’s beautiful landscape. If you are starting to get tired of the scenery inside your home, here are 4 things you can do in Ottawa while social distancing.

1. Take a bike ride along the Ottawa River Pathway

Personally, this is my absolute favourite place to go in the city for some peace and quiet and time outdoors. This pathway is easy to access with multiple entry points and parking spots along the way. Grab your bike and enjoy the calmness of the river. This activity gets you some good exercise but is also just a great way to relax and get fresh air without making any contact with people. I honestly think it is one of the best ways to practice social distancing while being outside, and the calmness of the area can really help to clear your head during this time.

2. Go for a jog around your neighbourhood

Ottawa is unique as most neighbourhoods have many gems to explore. Some have trails leading to forests, and others have pathways that may lead to the river or a small creek. In our daily lives, most of us don’t have the time to go and explore the things that may be right in our backyards, and there is no better time to do that than right now! Go for a jog around your neighbourhood and see if you can find a hidden gem. Whether it is a park you never knew existed, or a beautiful landscape you didn’t expect could be in your area, you might be surprised by what you find.

 3. Take a hike in Gatineau Park

While their visitor centre is currently closed to minimize contact, Gatineau Park is still open, and trails are still being maintained for visitors. With the spring weather upon us, it is definitely a great time to explore some of the hiking trails and many lakes around the park. Snowshoe trails are also open, but make sure to have your own snowshoes since rentals are unavailable at the moment!

You can also try out winter biking along their trails as well. The park has a lot of great activities that you can do while keeping your distance from others, so it is a great choice for a day outdoors. Make sure to check out their website before your visit in case of any updates.

Update: As of March 23, 2020 at 9pm, Gatineau Park has now been closed for visitors to ensure safety of both visitors and park personnel.

4. Check out Mer Bleue Bog

Mer Bleue Bog is somewhat of a hidden gem in terms of things to do in Ottawa. Located in the South-East end of the city, many people don’t know about this great spot with amazing trails. This conservation area has free parking and picnic areas to enjoy the outdoors.

Mer Bleue is actually one of the most studied bogs in the world and is used for climate research. Take this opportunity to walk along the boardwalk and explore this underrated part of the city. You can learn more about Mer Bleue on their website

Being outdoors is one of the only places we can be outside of our homes during this period of social distancing. Being at home is starting to get boring and I am definitely finding myself running out of things to do around my house. Even while social distancing, there are so many things to do in Ottawa and places to explore outdoors that we may not have even thought of. Take this time to try new things and see new places, it’s the best time when you don’t have anything better to do!
